hey all... need some advise...
I have been to vets quite a bit as Layla my 5yr GSD has some allergies, we found out she is allergic to Pork, Rice, Cows Milk and some enviornmental things as well.
The vet asked what we feed her and we feed raw and have done for many yrs with no issues, not the vet Layla sees is different one to Diesels (13months) and Layla's was not happy at all with her diet??
He has told me she is getting far too much protein and not a good enough balanced diet.
We feed Layla either Tripe, chicken wings/necks, beef chunks with bone, cooked lamb, some veg scraps, heart(which may have to stop as I think its pgs heart), liver once a week, boiled egg a week, as well as cod liver oil each day. she is on about 475g a day depending on if its liver day. and Diesel is on about 550kg (he is a very big boy at 55kg)
Now neither of them have had issues due to there diet, there stool may be a little solid sometimes, but its not all the time.
He has suggested that I find some dry food without rice and pork in it to give them, and to give them raw one meal and dry food the other meal so that they have a balanced diet.
He also said that if i keep on the diet they are on then the risk of damaging their kindneys and heart is massive?? Diesels vet never said a think like this when i told her that he was on raw.. (they are both at the same surgery)
He said this may help with Layla's allergys as well.
Any advice on what you think i should do would be great??? (my otherhalf thinks he is talking a load of rubbish and he hates that vets eeppp) |

I would tell your vet that unless he takes onboard further understanding of the serious issues associated with medications, vaccinations, inappropriate diet and environmental issues about the benefits of a natural raw diet, you would prefer to see the other vet who perhaps has.
If pork is a problem, have you tried it from another supplier? An animal is only as good as the food that it eats.
I am lucky enough to have an organic supplier of pork and do not have any problems but if I didn't have this option, I would leave it out and concentrate on other meats that didn't cause a problem.
There are far too many vets who are averse to recommending/concurring with procedures and medications that are based on economic considerations and whose clinics are used as a showroom for the pet food industry and drug/medication companies profits as well as lining their own pockets.
Regards

Thanks Jack..
I agree with you, its just hard to get in with the Vet we get on with...
The pork i usualy get from the butchers.. we never really fed her much anyway, so its not a big thing to leave out of her Diet really.. |

I agree with Jack also!
I hardly feed my lot pork, unless its a whole pork carcass. I would give the egg raw and I would cut down on the cod liver oil to 5 days a week rather than 7 days, this gives the body a 'break' and leaves the body more able to deal with assimilating the oil on the days they do get it.
And you wouldnt be feeding cows milk or rice anyway on a raw diet would you? I would deffo not be changing to 50% complete and 50% raw. The Vet obviously doesnt understand the long-term detrimental implications of doing so.
I cant see how he thinks itsw a protein high diet either. Many vets believe dogs need carbs and they dont!!! I dont see anything wrong with what you are giving, maybe just a little tweaking is needed.
When we have, in the past, had vets commenting on our raw diet, I just nod and agree, then leave the surgery and do my own thing anyway, lol!! _________________ I might not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. |
